£260 Raised at the 2nd Great Selsey Bake-Off 2014
(For photos - please click here)The day arrived of the 2nd Great Selsey Bake-Off. I finished off the paperwork, the banners, put the prize money into envelopes and went off to The Seal feeling quite nervous about the outcome. Last year the 1st Great Selsey bake-Off had been a huge success but would it be the same again this year? The weather was on our side as it was a gloriously sunny and mild October day, not like last year when it tipped down with rain.
Since the back room of the Seal was now part of the kitchen after their refurbishment back in January the judging was to take place where the pool table resides, with a large black curtain separating the judges from the competitors.
Setting out the
official paraphernalia i.e. the entry sheet, the judges’ sheets, the cocktail sticks with the numbered labels on to poke into the entries
for my identification purposes, I then settled outside in the sunshine with a large glass of red before the competitors started arriving
with their wonderful creations.
We had 40 entries this year with the flapjack category
being the most popular and at 2.30 p.m. I ushered the judges behind the curtain and the difficult task of judging began. This year the
judges were Steve Power of Wave 105 FM, Neil Kimber, Highhouse Insurance (sponsor of the competition), Paul Seabrook, Master Baker, and
Roy Chappell, food connoisseur. They started with the quiches, of which there were 9 entered, and there was much discussion on whether
or not the entries were a quiche or a flan (yes, really) before finally declaring a winner.
Then it was on to the bread (7 entries) and more deliberation
before the decision was made.
The flapjacks were eagerly anticipated by the judges and
they weren’t disappointed. The final decision was not at all influenced by the fact that two of the entries were accompanied by a small
glass of Jack Daniels in which to dip the flapjacks or glug with them, honestly, although one of them did eventually get judged to be
the winner…
The final category was carrot cake and there were some
splendidly decorated cakes on show. Everyone had made such an effort with their cakes and it was difficult to decide who should be the
winner.
After 1¾ hours of trying to herd cats (yes, that’s what it felt like to me trying to get the judges to make a decision!) we finally had a result and Steve Power announced the prize winners with Neil Kimber making the presentations.
During the afternoon, Sabina and Melissa had done a grand job of selling
raffle tickets for the beautiful cake which Elaine had made and this was won by Bruce Johnson.
The cakes were then raffled and the clearing up began. Everyone had a wonderful time and agreed that it should be held again next year.

Everyone connected to this competition are so very pleased that it went so well and that there were so many happy and smiling people attending. The judges and sponsor were unanimous in their decision to do it all again next year and it just remains for me, as the organiser, to thank everyone for their help and their support - and to the contestants -
